Scholarships and Tuition Waivers


A limited number of scholarships will be provided to qualified students who fall into one of the categories mentioned below. If you are interested in being considered for a scholarship, fill out our online application for ISS scholarships and submit supporting documents by mail, FAX or email attachment before the deadline.

* Exchange students are not eligible. Scholarships only apply to fee-paying students.
* Students may apply for any or all scholarships for which they are eligible, but only one will be awarded.
* Each scholarship is awarded on the basis of screening of documents submitted at the same time as this application.
* The supporting documents should be submitted by mail, FAX or email attachment before the application deadline in order for the ISS staff to process the application before the award announcement. 


 a. Child of HUFS Alumni

    Tuition waiver of  KRW 500,000 offered to child of HUFS alumni;

    Document to submit: 

1. Copy of the parent’s graduation certificate

  b. Outstanding Academic Record (based on college transcript)

    Tuition waivers of KRW 1,000,000 & KRW 500,000 ; open to international students who have completed at least one full academic year of study

    Documents to submit:
1. Letter of application explaining why you deserve a scholarship
2. Your university transcript (showing GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale or 3.9 on a 4.5 scale)
3. Two  letters of recommendation from professors which mention how your attendance
at the ISS program will benefit your academic career.

 c. Students from HUFS International Partner Universities

    Tuition waiver of  KRW 500,000 offered to any student from a HUFS partner university.

(Officially designated “exchange students” should not apply for this scholarship. )

    Document to submit:
1. Proof of student status at a HUFS partner university

(e.g. copy of current academic year registration, letter from Study Abroad office certifying that you are an enrolled student, etc.)

    ※ Officially designated exchange students:

    One or more students from a HUFS international partner university may be designated as official exchange students. Whether housing is provided during your stay at HUFS for ISS depends upon the specific bilateral institutional agreement in place. Interested students should inquire about the agreement with HUFS in the international/study abroad office at their home institution. 

 d.  Korean Studies /Asian – East Asian Studies Major from Non-Partner Institutions

    Tuition waiver of KRW 500,000 ; open to any international student majoring in Korean Studies, Asian / East Asian Studies or closely related field, e.g. Asian Business, Asian Performing Arts, etc.

    Documents to submit:
1. Letter of application stating your major and explaining why you want to participate in 

2. Your university transcript

3. Letter of recommendation from a professor explaining how your attendance at the ISS program will benefit your academic career.

 e.  Korean Adoptees

     Tuition waiver of KRW 1,000,000 ; open to any Korean adoptee

     Documents to submit: 

    1. Letter of application stating why you want to participate in ISS

     2. Certified copy of your adoption paper

     3. Certified copy of your birth certificate

f.  Foreign Spouse of Korean Citizens

     Tuition waiver of KRW 1,000,000; open to any foreign spouse of a Korean citizen

     Documents to submit:

     1. Letter of application stating why you want to participate in ISS

     2. Certified copy of marriage certificate

     3. Certified copy of Korean family registry papers (혼인관계증명서/ 가족관계증명서) if applicable

     4. Certified copy of Korean alien registration card with F series visa

g. Descendants of UN Korean War Veterans

   100% Tuition waiver to any international descendants of UN Korean War veterans

    Documents to submit:

1. Proof of veteran’s service in the Korean War from whom he or she is claiming a relationship

2. Certificate of direct descent from Korean War veteran

h. ISS 2013 Outstanding Achievement (awarded in August at the end of ISS)

Two cash awards will be made to students who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance in the summer program. ISS faculty will nominate students from their classes for this award. 

One award will be in the amount of KRW1,000,000 and the other in the amount of KRW 500,000.
